Preparing Your Child for a Successful School Year

Helping Ease the Back-to-School Scaries

Summer always seems to fly by. Before we know it, backpacks are coming out of the closet, school supplies are filling shopping carts, and the excitement of a new school year begins.

For many children, though, August can also bring a few butterflies.

Whether your child is starting kindergarten, moving up to middle school, or simply returning after a fun summer break, it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. The good news? With a little preparation and encouragement, you can help your child begin the school year feeling confident, calm, and ready to learn.

Here are a few simple ways to ease the “Back-to-School Scaries.”

1. Re-establish Your School Routine

Children thrive on routine because it helps them know what to expect.

About one to two weeks before school starts, begin easing back into your regular schedule by:

  • Going to bed a little earlier each night.
  • Waking up at school time.
  • Eating breakfast together.
  • Limiting screen time before bedtime.

Small changes now make the first day feel much less overwhelming.

2. Get Your Child Involved

Preparing for school can actually be fun!

Invite your child to help:

  • Pack their backpack.
  • Pick out school supplies.
  • Choose their first-day outfit.
  • Organize their homework space.

When children help prepare, they begin to feel excited instead of anxious.

3. Talk About Their Feelings

Sometimes children don’t need all the answers—they simply need someone to listen.

Ask questions like:

“What are you most excited about?”

“Is there anything you’re a little nervous about?”

Let them know it’s okay to have big feelings. Even adults get nervous before something new!

4. Focus on Confidence, Not Perfection

Remind your child that school isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about:

  • Trying their best.
  • Asking questions.
  • Learning from mistakes.
  • Being kind.
  • Growing every day.

Confidence grows one small success at a time.

5. Read Together Every Day

Reading together—even for just 15–20 minutes a day—helps children strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, and imagination.

Better yet, it creates meaningful memories you’ll both treasure.

6. Pray Together

One of the greatest ways to prepare for a new school year is through prayer.

Before the first day of school, take a moment together and ask God to bless your child’s year with:

  • Courage
  • Wisdom
  • New friendships
  • Kindness
  • Joy in learning

Knowing that God walks beside them each day can bring incredible peace to both children and parents.
